Acupressure Advantages
Using Acupressure and its healing touch promotes the following benefits:
Cleansing, detoxification and drainage of the key organs will promote immunity, circulation, weight loss and rejuvenation of the body.
Stimulation of the acupoints with the fingers rather than with needles. It may be used prior to acupuncture to enhance treatment. Alone it is not as effective as acupuncture. It is part of Oriental Medicine and is best done by the true master of Oriental Medicine: a licensed acupuncturist.
Acupressure is a traditional Chinese medicine bodywork technique, and it is based on the same ideas as acupuncture. Acupressure involves the placing of physical pressure, either by hand, elbow, or with the aid of various devices, on different pressure points on the surface of the body (this might be a far distant from the symptom, but is related by what is called the meridian system) to bring about relief through the greater balance and circulation of energies in the body(qi). The intended is to affect and balance the energetic system of the body in order to treat the human body, mind, emotions, energetic fields, and spirit.
The first formally recognized mention of qi is in the Chinese writings of the Shang dynasty oracle bones, although some practitioners believe the first hints of acupressure or reflexology has been found in ancient Indian texts. The Chinese writings of the Shang dynasty oracle bones was produced between (c. 16th-11th century B.C.) in the Daxinzhuang Shang ruins.
Note: Oracle Script is an ancient script carved on tortoise shells or animal bones. Having emerged during the Shang Dynasty (BC 1600-1000), Oracle Script is considered the oldest script in China
The earliest evidence of the meridian system being used for health purposes was possibly found in Europe, of all places. A 5,000 year old mummy, known as tzi the Iceman, who was found preserved in an Alpine glacier appears to have tattoos. Some of these tattoos correspond to points that a modern acupuncturist or tui na specialist would use to treat symptoms of diseases that tzi seems to have suffered from. These symptoms of diseases include digestive parasites and degenerative bone disease. However, it is extremely difficult to speculate on the meaning of the tattoos as to whether they served as a decorative, religious, or a medical function.
Also, many East Asian martial arts extensively study and use acupressure for self-defense and health purposes (chin na). The points or combinations of points are said to be used to manipulate or incapacitate an opponent. Also, the martial artists regularly massage their own acupressure points routinely to remove blockages from their own meridians. They claim this routine enhances their circulation and flexibility and keeping the points "soft," or less vulnerable to an attack. One theme of the wuxia genre of movies and novels is to attack the acupressure points.
The concepts of internal and external environment are very important to the philosophy of traditional Asian medicine. It is believed that the human body encloses a perpetual flow of bioenergy, or life-force, called "chi, "ki" or "qi". This energy flows into the body and along with specific pathways, called meridians, influence the function of all organs. In healthy individuals, this flow maintains a constant balance with both itself and the external environment. However, when internal or external events occur which disturbs this balance, diseases develop. Along the pathways (meridians) are a large number of pressure points that act as "valves" for the flow of chi. When properly performed, the stimulation of these points begin to restore balance to the internal environment, thereby relieving symptoms.
