Japanese acupuncture is one of a few major styles of acupuncture. In general terms, Japanese acupuncture is unique in its efficiency and precision. It requires additional training above and beyond general TCM Theory and Practice. The techniques are often aimed at using the minimal amount of stimulation to create the greatest effect. To contrast with TCM, Japanese acupuncture typically uses thinner needles, less points and less stimulation by using more shallow needle insertions even to the point of just touching the needle to the skin. Additionally, while not entirely unique to Japanese acupuncture, practitioners tend to use the abdomen as a diagnostic tool more often than other styles of acupuncture.
In the 6th century the Japanese were introduced to Chinese Medicine and the integrated theories of acupuncture, herbal medicine and bodywork, and since then, practitioners have developed many unique theories and techniques. Much of the Traditional Chinese Medicine theory is still used and the majority of the acupuncture points are used with only a few modifications.
